Please Respect Our Decision
He got the text this afternoon. Now it's last call, and he needs to say it out loud to someone.
There were twenty minutes to go before closing when he came in.
The taproom had been empty since ten. Janet sat behind the bar with her phone flat beside the register and a clean glass in her hand. She'd wiped the glass twice and had begun a third time since there was nothing else to do, plus the game on her phone had become stupid.
She looked up when the door opened.
“What are you doing here?”
He stood inside with one hand still on the door. He wore the good jacket he used for parties. The collar had folded inward on one side and there was a dark place on the shoulder where someone had hugged him or spilled something. His face looked hot and his eyes did not.
“It’s not last call yet, is it?”
